Guolin was a volunteer judge at the 2020 Invention Convention Singapore Open Nationals. An engineer at Pratt & Whitney, Guolin is an inventor as well with 5 patents to his name.

“Volunteering as a judge was an opportunity to give back to the community and participate in efforts to promote STEM among youth”, Guolin said. “’I’ve participated in similar events such as challenges & Hackathons during my university years, and I’ve appreciated how engineering and business or entrepreneurship can go hand-in-hand.”

In his first time as a judge, Guolin also picked up some lessons from judging our young inventors. “Everyone has something to share. You do not have to be the best in the field to guide someone else starting out in their journey.”

What was his favorite part of the entire process? Guolin says that it was the young inventors of course! “It was exciting to be on the other side of the fence and listening to the students sharing about their innovation.”

Volunteering as an online judge is a great way to get involved without leaving your home or office! You can volunteer from any location; all you need is a computer and an internet connection. Your willingness to participate as a judge will go a long way toward ensuring participants are inspired and excited about inventing and pursuing a career in STEM!
