Over the month of December, IDE Academy collaborated with Temasek Shophouse and held a 3-week, 6-session Invention Sprint Workshop for Youths over November and December 2021. The workshop aimed to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) design thinking to spur youths’ interest in STEM careers and create positive social impact to benefit our community. By the end of the workshop, the youths created their own sustainable non-working invention prototypes. These prototypes
will be showcased at Temasek Shophouse, from Monday, 3 January 2022 – Friday, 28 January 2022.
The workshop introduced these youth participants to relevant UN SDG goals, and empowered them to find and solve real-world problems in the community, using innovation and creativity. 18 students took part in the workshop, and 14 projects will be featured in the showcase.
One of the projects is Eco-washer, which functions like a dishwasher, enabling rural communities to reuse
water from washing dishes. The water is then filtered and made drinkable. The brainchild of Luqman Hakim Kamaludeen, 13, and Elisha Lee, 13, the two homeschooled young inventors enjoyed the Design & Build process and found it “fun to go hands-on to construct something from a drawing”.
Another duo of inventors, Emma Yan, 13, and Sarah Chua, 12, created Actually A Bin (A.A.B.). They found that not many people would go through the trouble of washing and drying recyclables before sending them off to be recycled. These contaminated recyclables are then thrown away as trash. To enhance recycling efforts and make recycling more convenient, the duo invented A.A.B. to wash these contaminated recyclables so that these items get a chance to be recycled.
Additionally, there was a Youth recap session on Saturday, 8 January 2022 at Temasek Shophouse. Inventors, parents, and educators gathered for a ‘Show and Tell’ session, where the youth inventors spent 5 minutes explaining their inventions, their thought processes, and learnings behind their prototypes.
