5 Reasons Every Child Must Invent!
When we invent, we typically go through a number of stages. We start off by identifying a problem that we want to solve. Then, we try to understand it better and come up with ideas to address it. Next, we design a solution. Finally, we work on building, testing, and refining our invention. How does the process of inventing benefit children?
It develops critical thinking
The process of inventing requires children to put on a critical lens to make observations about real-world problems. They learn to break down a problem into parts to work out a solution that addresses the issue.
It fosters creativity
Inventing invites children to practise two kinds of creative thinking — fluent thinking and flexible thinking.
Fluent thinking is the ability to generate many ideas. Flexible thinking is the ability to view an object or situation in different ways, or to see varying possibilities to something. Children get loads of practise in creative thinking when they brainstorm solutions to a problem or come up with ideas to improve their invention.
It encourages empathy
Take a look around you. What is an invention that you think has “saved your life” or made your life a little better? Look at your footwear, your watch, the device you’re reading this from. An invention is an object or process that was created to improve someone’s life.
Before developing solutions, inventors seek to understand the challenges we face and how it affects us. This requires perspective-taking, awareness of others’ needs, and a touch of empathy.
It builds resilience
The process of inventing can be long and arduous. Some inventors get stuck at one stage for a very long time; others design, build, and test, only to meet failure. Many start over multiple times before getting it right. When children invent, they learn to bounce back from failure and persevere in the face of obstacles that come their way!
It is empowering
Nothing beats arriving at the finish line and learning that you made an impact. Inventing gives children the agency to own a problem and work it out independently. Seeing the fruits of their invention journey positively alters the way children see themselves and what they can do!
When we encourage children to invent, we create opportunities for children to develop dispositions and skills that they can apply in anything they do. What are you waiting for? Get your child started on the invention journey!
